Introduction

Intellicon is the foremost name in power system voltage stability and reliability. Revolutionary technology development and world renowned power system expertise have coalesced into an unmatched ability to provide powerful insight into the causes of and remedies for voltage instability and voltage collapse.

Intellicon's consulting services combine a comprehensive understanding of voltage instability with intelligent algorithms to perform the assessments of where, when, why and how voltage instability occurs and to mitigate and posture the system against voltage instability. The massive computation required is provided using powerful cluster computing to bring you the best in voltage stability analysis. Intellicon consulting services range from system design, system planning, and operation planning. Intellicon utilitizes its specialized technology to deliver a complete, system-wide picture of voltage stability and voltage instability remediation.

Intellicon Analysis at a Glance
  • Creates and simulates a set of 500,000 1,000,000 single and double contingencies to determine those that actually cause cascading voltage instability rather than those that are close to causing cascading voltage instability. Traditional methods use at most a few hundred contingencies that can not be guaranteed to initiate voltage instability
  • Diagnose where, when, why, and how the voltage instability occurs for each contingency by creating a comprehensive system-wide understanding of the structural cause of each instability. This can only be guessed at or at best is approximated using traditional iterative P-V or V-Q curve methods
  • Identify voltage rescheduling, unit commitment, load shedding, and system protection controls for each contingency where traditional P-V and V-Q methods are unable to obtain load flow solutions and adequately decrease proximity to voltage instability
  • Provides a four step diagnostic method to separate contingencies which cause voltage instability from those that suffer from load flow numerical problems
  • Can posture each region and loadpocket against voltage instability for a group of contingencies that cause similar cascading voltage instability patterns
  • Uses full Newton load flow solutions from industry standard Siemens PSS/E or GE PSLF software.
Intellicon Benefits Regarding New FERC Regulations

FERC states in its Standard Market Design proposal that the following three shortcomings of existing P-V and V-Q methods must be overcome for the Standard Market Design to be successful.

    • The contingencies that produce voltage instability are generally unknown and often the system must be stressed in a specific manner for the contingency to produce voltage instability; Intellicon technology provides a comprehensive search for load pockets and a comprehensive search for contingencies for each identified loadpocket
    • Loadpockets were often never known to cause voltage instability until after a major incident and that there is no comprehensive search for such loadpockets. The Intellicon technology searches for all subnetworks that can produce cascading voltage instability as well as the subset of the loadpockets that are vulnerable to local or cascading voltage instability for one or more contingencies
    • P-V and V-Q curve stress methods do not accurately compute the Available Transfer capability. The Intellicon technology has shown that a proper definition of what constitutes a loadpokcet allows a far more accurate assessment of Available Transfer Capability for that loadpocket

Similarly the August 14th 2003 Blackout Report suggests that:

    • There is no method for preventing voltage instability based on hour ahead assessments
    • There is no safety net for preventing voltage instability

Intellicon uses scalable clustered computing technology allowing updates of the voltage collapse contingency selection, contingency vulnerable area, and postured controls for each area a day ahead and with some approximation for the hour ahead assessment. Because Intellicon technology generates such a complete assessment of the systemic causes of voltage instability, it can quickly provide the appropriate diagnostics and controls.

Intellicon is adapting use of its Postured Load Shedding and Postured Voltage Rescheduling algorithms for use as under voltage load shedding and under voltage capacitor protections. When completed, this will provide an important safety net against voltage instability.

Intellicon Benefits Regarding New NERC Reccomendations

The National Electric Reliability Council made thirteen recommendations after the August 14th 2003 blackout that include reviewing procedures and methods for better protecting the power grid from voltage instability and blackout in the areas of:

    • System design, planning, and operation criteria
    • System voltage and reactive control
    • System Protection
    • Real Time Control

Intellicon is working with utilities, Transmission Operators and ISOs to modify their current procedures and methods in the areas of design, planning, operations, and control to respond to each of these NERC recommendations.
